Sauerkraut Workshop with Peter Glantz

In this hands on workshop, Peter Glantz teaches you to make crunchy, tangy sauerkraut similar to what you get in Eastern Europe, Bubbies Brand, or a New York Deli. The difference is that your results will be fresher and unique to you. This workshop teaches a simple, no-nonsense, and fun approach to making sauerkraut.

Making kraut puts you inside a story as old as civilization. Fermentation is connected to the origin of agriculture, alchemy, and the current movement toward localized, sustainable, and healthy communities. By understanding the story of sauerkraut the experience of making it becomes deeper and more fulfilling. Fermentation empowers you to preserve your own vegetables the way our ancestors did - no electricity or heat canning required. And, it’s delicious!

The workshop is geared toward beginners and experienced fermenters who want to make a more consistent, quality sauerkraut or expand their understanding of the art of fermentation. Included in the fee are a glass jar and a custom ceramic weight made by Peter's wife - Providence artist Meredith Stern. This starter kit and the knowledge from the class gives you everything you need to make sauerkraut at home. Everyone leaves with a pint of sauerkraut they help make and the tools to make more!

Peter Glantz is a gardener, fermenter, filmmaker, and performer who between performing at The Hirshhorn Museum and making music videos with Wilco, Andrew W.K., Death Vessel, and OK Go, gives private fermentation workshops around the country. He is the 2015 Fellowship Merit award winner in Filmmaking from the Rhode Island State Council For The Arts. He lives in Providence, RI with his wife, artist Meredith Stern, who makes handmade ceramic fermenting crocks that will be available at the workshop. They live on the west end in a house called Wonderland.
